Reflections on Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat by Hal Herzog

Phew. This book was a lot!

I mean that mostly in a good way, though at times the passages made both my head (and heart) hurt. While I think those feelings are one mark of thoughtful work, they also meant I had to pace myself through the chapters more than usual. On my final day of reading I started feeling down, and it wasn’t until I put Some We Love away for a while that I realized why.

Talking about morality is difficult. Especially when we center the conversation around something as inherently emotional as our connections with animals—and address a wide audience of researchers, philosophers, and the average person all together.
