Sometimes it’s helpful to think about my relationship with my dog the way I think about my relationship with my husband, family, or close friends.

Of course there are key distinctions. We are different creatures of different species. It would be remiss to act like our bonds are exactly the same!

But I also think it’s remiss to ignore the parallels completely.

Here are the times I find this human relationship analogy most helpful—and a few things I make sure to be cautious about along the way.
